Why This Work

I've spent 20+ years being the person organizations call when talented teams are drowning.


The scenario was always variations on the same theme: a department or program that started small, proved valuable, scaled rapidly and then broke. Brilliant people working unsustainable hours. Critical processes that existed only in someone's head. Deliverables that varied wildly in quality because there were no standards. Leaders making every decision personally because authority had never been distributed. Growth creating chaos instead of capacity.


My role was consistent: rebuild the operational foundation so the work could actually scale. I audited existing processes (or lack thereof), mapped what should happen versus what was happening, created intake systems so requests didn't just pile up in email, designed delivery workflows so projects moved forward systematically, documented standards so quality became structural rather than personal, built knowledge management systems so expertise could transfer, installed quality assurance so outputs remained consistent, and established clear authority distribution so decisions didn't bottleneck. This was the work inside public health organizations, policy teams, and departments that had outgrown their infrastructure.


The pattern I kept seeing: organizations hire expertise, give that expertise increasing responsibility, but never build the systems to support delivery at scale. The assumption is that smart people will figure it out. They do, but through personal heroics, unsustainable hours, and carrying every process in their own heads. It works until it doesn't.


When I left full-time work, I recognized the same structural problem playing out among independent practitioners. Physician entrepreneurs doing expert witness work, advisory consulting, and speaking engagements; running $300K+ businesses out of their inbox. Consultants and service business owners generating $1M-$5M in revenue with no documented processes, no standardized delivery, no operational foundation. Expertise that had far outpaced infrastructure.


Leadership Operative serves those practitioners with the same approach that worked inside complex organizations: build the structural systems that let expertise scale without burning out the person who carries it. The work is the same. The clients are different. The problems are identical.
